Short-term Internship in Law

Work in high court mostly involved assisting Tuan Aznin while he handling cases in chamber. Keeping his document in order & sitting in on his meeting w client. Through this aspect of my work, I was able to see his work at close quarters & easier to ask if did not understand. I was given a task by him to coding the cases. 41SA, 41H and 41S which are for the appeal case from the lower court to high court.
To beat my boredom after two weeks at high court, I went to the lower court which are the Magistrates & Sessions after finish all the works to learn more about legal things. Before that, I introduced myself to the Senior Assistant Registrar, Puan Shamsol Azwa Martadza. She brought me to the magistrate court for the drug case & explained the step of the filing after completion of the hearing. Besides, I also had my chance to see the remand.

After attended some court hearings, I did some research and met Mr William from Andy Seah and Associates. I asked a lot of issues relating to:-
            - taxable income
            - the status of cases used in a drafted court submission,
            - the practical consequences of operating payment system w/out license
            - the charges imposed on a sale & purchase of land
            - the procedures involved in applying for license to import; and
            - distribute alcohol
All these questions were from the books that I read at the Law Library. Furthermore, one of the staff, Miss Rahimah has taught me about the probate case. Receipt of the probate is the first step in the legal process of administering the estate of a deceased person, resolving all claims & distributing the deceased person's property under a will. Probate is a process that proves the will of a deceased person is valid, so their property can in due course be retitled or transferred to beneficiaries of the will. As w any legal proceeding, there are technical aspects to probate administration.

At the same time, I've learnt about the importance of practical from her too. She said some graduates & new lawyers approach matter in a much more academic, rather than practical, manner. This academic approach can create difficulties for new lawyers in terms of ask, essential legal skills such as time management and responsiveness, managing client expectations, commerciality and advising on the most appropriate strategy or tactics.

Now, I'm looking forward to the long weekend. So that, I can procrastinate a whole extra day.

The First Week

I eagerly waited for my internship to begin. Currently, I'm studying law. Completed two years of law school & now in my final year of study. With graduation inching closer, I realised that there is a profound need for me to decide on the specialities that in mind to practice in the future. There is no better way of gaining insights, feels, than through internship.
On the first day of internship, the five student from University of Sultan Zainal Abidin & I met Puan Najwa who is the Deputy Registrar at Ipoh High Court for self report. Then, she was briefing the rules for courthouse & explained some practical information and knowledge for our short-term internships in law. Besides, we were divided into 3 groups which has 3 different supervisor. I had an opportunity to intern under Tuan Mohamed Aznin bin Dato' Arif who is also the Deputy Registrar.

After met Puan Najwa, she asked all of us to see Mr Ahmad, an interpreter. He introduced us to the judge, The Honourable Dato' Zainal Adzam bin Abd. Ghani. And then, I was attended court hearings regarding to criminal cases. In general, criminal is the body of law relates to crime. It regulates social conduct and prescribes threatening, harming or otherwise endangering the health, safety, and moral welfare of people. It includes the punishment of people who violate these laws. Criminal law differs from civil law, whose emphasis is more on dispute resolution and victim compensation than on punishment. The murder trial that I watched was involving the old lady who is suspected as temporary insane. She killed her husband once she got mental problem. Here, I was able to see the DPP and the famous lawyer, Mr Edward Bon at close quarters. Furthermore, I've learnt the criminal procedure which explained by Mr Ahmad after the completion of the hearing.

As the second day, I met my supervisor for self-introduce. He's a great mentor & already taught me a lot. He gave the files and some documents which related to civil procedure for me to photocopy & revise. This internship is pretty much 'hands on' and I'm learning on the fly. I've realised that everyday in this field is different & it's hard to know what to expect.
*Lawyers in action
Again, I went to the main high court which is the criminal court to hear the cases. I've learnt about the trial written submissions & heard an appeal case w the judgement. Then, they continued the yesterday's trial of insanity case again. So dramatic.

For the next day, The Honourable Dato' Zainal Adzam bin Abd. Ghani gave us some guide how to be a lawyer. Besides, he taught how to handle the case in chamber. Chambers are organised into 3 trial chambers and an Appeal Chamber. They are assisted in their work by the Chambers Legal Support team. After that, we were given some lecture by interpreter about the types of summons in chambers, divorce petition and the element of criminal.
"Where you see yourself after five years? You're 20. This is the best time to get a soulmate. Lawyer is too busy w other types of legal work & will spend time on the cases." - Mr Ahmad

LOLS he is soooo funneh~XDD We always get free legal advise from him.

Then, I went to civil court to see the trial. I was about the land matters. I'm happy cause able to talk w Mr Leonard Anselm Gomes from L.A Gomes, Meor Shaazizi and Associates firm. He is a respected lawyer w numerous feathers in his cap for plaintiff. He was kind enough to explain all the things that I do not understand bout land law.

The Ipoh High Court on Thursday conducted pertaining to auction sales of land and rural areas, pursuant to recovery of arrears of land revenue. Mr Rosli taught us the procedure of the auction sale and showed all the documents involved, including the bank draft. This place was so happening w the crowd of the bidders.
So, that's all for the first week. Ole! Thursday is the official start of the weekend cause tomorrow is Sultan Perak's birthday. Hide your work, get your weekend on.
